Plaza de España of Madrid is a big square located in the old part of the city in the neighbor of Argüelles. Plaza de Españas links Gran Vía and Calle de la Princesa. Before the construction of Gran Vía, the square was called Plaza de San Marcial.
This square is surrounded by remarkable and historical buildings. Most of them are the highest constructions of this Spanish city.

First, there is Torre de Madrid, built during 1954 and 1957 by the Otamendi Machimbarrena brothers, who wanted the building to have 500 stores, galleries and even a cinema.
In addition, there is Edificio España, which was built in 1953. It has 25 floors and it is 384 feet tall.
Casa Gallardo is another important structure located near Plaza de España and is one of the few monuments of modern architecture in Madrid. It was built during 1911 and 1914 by Federico Arias Rey.
Finally, there is the building of Real Compañía Asturiana de Minas built during 1891 and 1899 by Manuel Martínez Ángel.
In the middle of the square there is a huge fountain as monument dedicated to Miguel de Cervantes. It consists of the statue of Cervantes in the top of it and then Don Quijote, Sancho Panza, Dulcinea and Aldonza Lorenzo. The construction is surrounded by gardens and spaces for the visitors to sit and enjoy the place.

Getting there
Plaza de España is only 0.6 miles away from Puerta del Sol. You can easily get there walking around 12 minutes.
Head northwest on Calle Preciados toward Calle Tetuán, the take a slight right toward Calle Gran Vía, then turn left onto Calle Gran vía. Turn left onto Plaza de España and finally turn right and you will be there.
By subway: lines 3 and 5 Callao stop.
